NVQ Assessment

An NVQ is a vocational qualification that can be awarded to people in Britain. An NVQ assessment requires the person being assessed to demonstrate their competency in a particular field, it differs from an academic qualification insofar as most academic assessments judge the level of knowledge a person has about a certain subject rather than their competency at carrying a task.

There are no limits placed on who can undertake an NVQ assessment and there are no time constraints on when the NVQ assessment has to be completed by. This allows people who are working in full time jobs or have limit free time the change to undertake an NVQ assessment and obtain the qualification.

NVQ assessment is normally performed by an specialised NVQ assessor who will observe the candidate whilst they work after agreeing on certain targets that must meet. They compare their performance against standards and this NVQ assessment is ongoing until the candidate has met their previously set requirements.

There are five levels of NVQ assessment the first of which is relatively easy to obtain, whilst the fifth and most difficult level of NVQ assessment requires a significant amount of work and effort to achieve. The various levels of NVQ assessment are often compared to certain types of academic qualification to illustrate their worth. For example the first level of NVQ assessment is said to be equivalent to five GCSEs at grade E-D, however it is entirely speculative as to whether or not employers actually view the NVQ assessment in this manner.
